Some Job Hunting Tips For Fresh Graduates

The pressure of finding the first job can be immense, and the process confusing. Here are some tips to help you get that hired status that will mark your first steps into the corporate world.

As a fresh graduate registering himself/herself on job portals, attending campus placements and job fairs, the excitement over venturing into the corporate world would be high; however, make the transition from college seats to cubicle life a smooth one with the following job search tips:

Plan your career chart –

Don’t be restless in your attempt to get started in the corporate world. Step ahead with a clear vision for yourself while applying for jobs. Ensure that the job role is something that would serve as the right break into the industry.

So, what should be the benchmark for self when evaluating a job position? Well, if you can answer the question “why are you the best person for the job?” with clarity, and believe that you would fit well with the company’s overall culture, then go ahead and post that resume.

The most important person to convince about your candidature is you, then the interviewer. Walk into the interview room with a sense of preparedness – convince the interviewer that despite being a new graduate, you are confident in your abilities and believe that your qualifications and drive can contribute to the company’s success.

Network extensively –

This is the time when you need to gain as much knowledge and insight about the industry you are about to enter as you can. As a fresh graduate, build and get in touch with your resources like the campus placement cell, your college alumni, professors and social network. The core aim of networking is to spread word about who you are, what you are looking out for and your key skills. Send your resume across to contacts that might either know of openings in firms you would be keen on joining or further know people who could do the same.

Say yes to internship –

Job hunting can be a painful exercise, and especially so for freshers. There will be times when your application could be overlooked in favour of another candidate with more experience. So how do you tackle that? Well, start with small beginnings. Accept chances to intern with established organisations to build on your theoretical knowledge and add experience to your resume.

Work on projects along with seasoned professionals with enthusiasm and strong work ethics to help you build associations that can serve as sound references for you, or maybe even win an opportunity to join the same organisation as a full time employee.

Evaluate the jobs on offer –

Don’t jump at the first offer that is extended to you, nor be too choosy at the start of your career in terms of the designation and salary expectations. This is the time for you to allow your enthusiasm and need for learning to guide you to a job that will be the right combination of on-the-job learning and career advancement.
